No. 77: Udon Soup From Sushi 1
The udon soup at Fort Lauderdale take-out spot Sushi 1 is so popular around the New Times office, that not a day goes by when at least one person hasn't brought in a plastic, snap-top to-go container of the stuff. They'll sit down at their desks and break open that package, and the smell of dashi wafts through the whole office. The soup comes in a few varieties: A deeply meaty beef stew with fatty short ribs and soft onions; tempura shrimp with snap peas; vegetable soup with broccoli, cabbage, peas, onion, and colorful little fish cakes with pink squiggles that sit on the top and beg to be bitten. No matter the style, each bowl is packed with thick, fat udon noodles, sweet and light and highly slurpable. Best of all, none of the bowls cost more than $5. Now that's lunch.
