Broward took on Miami for the title of most "delish" county this past Friday during ARC Broward's Delish event, and the home team took the title from its Goliath neighbor to the south.

The event, held at the Young at Art Children's Museum, saw eight of South Florida's best chefs, ably assisted by students or graduates of ARC Broward's culinary institute. This program gives students with developmental disabilities real-world training in the culinary field, allowing them to learn valuable skills. Under the supervision of skilled chef instructors, the students hone their skills in working classrooms, preparing meals for ARC faculty and child care while also learning about nutritional guidelines, safe food practices, and meal planning.

Music, cocktails, a dessert bar from Sugar Buzz, and a silent auction rounded out the event, hosted by celebrity chef Carla Pellegrino and CBS Miami's Lisa Petrillo. In addition, a team of food writers (myself included) was tasked with finding the best bite out of a group of outstanding dishes.

In the end, the best overall winner was chef Adrienne Grenier of 3030 Ocean for her outstanding, colorful lamb belly. Served over a pea purée with smoked, pickled carrots, the dish was refined, flavorful, and balanced.
The fan-favorite award was presented to chef Nuno of Miami's R House for his Brazilian moqueca, filled with shrimp, scallops, and mahi in a fragrant tomato and coconut broth.
Philip Darmon of Hardy Park Bistro won the critics' choice title for a beautiful salmon, served over quinoa salad.
A personal favorite of the evening was the gumbo presented by Lauderdale Yacht Club's executive chef, Thomas Azar, assisted by ARC student chef Robert.
In the end, the most delish county was Broward, in part for amazing plates like this andouille-stuffed scallop from chef Andres Martin of the ARC Broward Culinary Institute.
Chef Martin and his student partners did double duty with the presentation of a perfectly tender short rib, making for a wonderful surf-and-turf combo when the two were eaten together.
