Deal of the Day: Endless Snow Crab Legs at Hott Leggz in Lighthouse Point

In the early 2000's, Red Lobster ran one of the country's first large-scale promotions on all-you-can-eat Alaskan snow crab legs. For $20 per person, it seemed like a winning (and affordable) idea. Crab legs are delicious, sure — but there's only so much you can stomach at one time before you get crab-legged-out. That was the reasoning, at least. The chain officially launched the promotion in 2003.

Too bad Red Lobster didn't do the math right, or, at the very least, vastly underestimated the American public. Just a few weeks into the promotion they were already seeing profit loss. With snow crab legs selling at an all-time high, the seafood-based chain actually lost money on every customer ordering more than a half dozen. The average customer — with no time restrictions or fine print to follow — ate at least two dozen, Red Lobster later reported.

The company wasn't pleased about the estimated $30 million loss, and quickly removed the CEO from her chair. Needless to say, you won't be seeing a similar promotion at Red Lobster ever again.

It makes you wonder if that's why Hott Leggz in Light House Point and Fort Lauderdale (2471 E Commercial Boulevard) has instituted a three-hour time window for patrons looking to cash-in on their own version of the all-you-can-eat snow crab deal they run each week. Every Saturday, the seafood-themed sports bar and restaurant offers an awesome endless snow crab leg deal for $31 per person, what normally rings in at $15 per pound. The time limit is the only catch — aside from the catch itself — for the special promotion that runs all day long from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m.

Established in 2011, Hott Leggz self-proclaimed specialty is "leggz" including three-pound buckets of dungeness crab, king crab, and snow crab boiled in your choice of sauce including coconut, lemon-lime, honey bourbon, and buffalo. The Chicago-based establishment is also known for its hot dogs, 10-ounce burgers, chicken and waffles, and gator or frogs' leg bites. On weekends, the kitchen is open until 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 3 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Hott Leggz is located at 3128 N. Federal Hwy., Lighthouse Point. Call 754-307-2444, or visit hottleggz.com.
