New breweries are cool, but when a brewery starts canning their product is even better because it expands availability to consumers. After nearly a year and a half in operation, Boynton Beach's Due South Brewing has finally started canning its beer.
Their first canned variety will be Category 3 IPA and the first batch was canned yesterday at the brewery. Now instead of lugging around bulky growlers of Due South brew, you will soon be able to snag a sixer at your local craft beer store for $9.99 each.

Brown Distributing Company in Florida is Due South's distributor. No word yet on when Cat 3 cans will be available, but according to Due South's Facebook page the first batch of about 10,000 will be available in the "West Palm area" in the coming weeks.
The cans may not be in store yet, but you can pick some up in the tasting room at the brewery, limited quantity of course.
Canning lines are huge investments for small craft breweries, costing hundred of thousands of dollars. So why cans? Not only do consumers regard them as the tap's next best thing, but it is more cost-advantageous and efficient to ship cans because more can fit on a single pallet than bottles. But despite the cost savings of cans, returns on sales still has a long way to catch up compared to bottles. The debate continues to brew.

For a little variety, Due South will also be releasing Caramel Cream Ale in cans. The brewery is pretty excited this launch. They even made a Youtube video to prove it.
