Once you get your pre-Thanksgiving chores out of the way -- either putting together the menu or figuring out which hired gun is gonna do the work for you -- it's time to unwind with yet even more food- and drink-focused fun. After the jump, find a list of five food and drink related events taking place this weekend in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Oh, and a little pre-holiday bonus? They're all free or super affordable.

5. Batten's Farmers Market Fall Festival
The kids need to burn off some energy and you want an easy lunch solution; enter the Batten's Farmers Market fall festival from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday. Nine food trucks are scheduled to appear, including 90 Miles to Go, Big Kahuna, Big Mike's BBQ, Firewall Food Truck, Fry Daddy, Gene's Joint, JOJI Yogurt, Lobsta Rollin, and The Philly Grill. In addition to the food, look for family-friendly activities like pony rides, hay rides, carnival booths, and arcade games, and more.
4. Frankenfood-free cook-off
Do you always get rave reviews for the all-organic salsa you make with the heirloom tomatoes you grow yourself on the back patio? Show off your nature-assisted cooking skills at the GE-Free Cook-off (that's genetically engineered-free for the uninitiated). The Food & Water Watch-sponsored event is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Marando Farms in Fort Lauderdale. Bring a GE-free dish to be evaluated by judges and the public. Best dish gets a trophy (and bragging rights at the next CSA pickup).
3. Oskar Blues Anniversary party
Canned beer has made great strides in shedding its low-brow reputation in recent years. (Seriously: You now can get Cigar City's delectable Jai Alai IPA locally in cans. The can has come into its own.) This weekend, Laser Wolf in Fort Lauderdale will celebrate the "can"iversary of Oskar Blues' Dale's Pale Ale, a forerunner in the current craft-beer-in-a-can movement. The party is Saturday night and attendees can enjoy two-for-one Oskar Blues cans from 8 to 9 p.m. This is a 21 and older shindig.
2. Dinner on the midway at Broward County Fair
Fine dining it ain't, but the Broward County Fair returns this weekend and it's bringing its all-American, deep-fried take on culinary whimsy with it. But it's not just about stuffing your face with elephant ears before taking a spin on the Tilt-a-Whirl. The fair's horticulture and agriculture tents are all about educating folks about the origin of food. For instance, master gardeners will be on premises throughout the weekend and a beekeeper will be buzzing around from noon to 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The fair continues daily through November 25.
1. Florida Turkish Festival
This two-day, free festival gives attendees a chance to sample Turkish cuisine (like doner kebap, grilled kofte, and baklava, to name a few) and coffee, in addition to taking in other cultural attractions. The festival is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center in Pompano Beach and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Florida Turkish Center Foundation in Fort Lauderdale (3020 NE 32nd Ave. #123). Sunday's events include a cooking demo. The festival is sponsored by the Florida Turkish American Association.
