We all know wheatgrass is good for us -- those little shots of bright green liquid that smell like fresh-mowed grass and taste like, well, fresh-mowed grass. But do you really know why? Really, what's so great about wheatgrass?

Aside from the fact that it's been called nature's "greatest healer," wheatgrass is also considered a complete food with an ideal alkaline-acid balance. Just one ounce contains 103 vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and is a natural source of laetrille, or B-17.

At Hippocrates Health Institute, co-directors Brian and Anna Maria Clement teach people about the healing properties of raw, vegan organic foods, and one of the most powerful healing foods on the planet, according to the Clements, is wheatgrass.

"Wheatgrass juice is one of nature's finest medicines," Anna Maria Clement told Clean Plate Charlie during a recent interview. "Wheatgrass therapy is an essential part of the Hippocrates signature Life Transformation Program because it contains high concentrations of beneficial enzymes that help protect our bodies from carcinogens, helping to digest toxins in the body."

In addition to providing a full range of vitamins and minerals, wheatgrass juice is also a complete source of protein in the form of poly peptides, the simpler and shorter chain of amino acids the body uses most efficiently because it can be directly absorbed into the blood and tissues. Wheatgrass is also a powerful detoxifier, especially of the liver and blood, helping to neutralize toxins and environmental pollutants in the body.

Wheatgrass also cleanses the blood due to its high content of chlorophyll, also known as the "life-blood of plants" which has a molecular structure almost identical to human hemoglobin -- our red blood cells. Chlorophyll is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and has a high content of oxygen, helping to deliver these properties to our blood. Oxygen is also vital to many body processes, especially for the brain, which uses 25 percent of our body's oxygen supply. Oxygen is used in the prevention and treatment of cancer, as cancer cells die in the presence of oxygen.

"Wheatgrass is very high in chlorophyll, one of the highest sources in the world," said Clement. "[At Hippocrates] we see red blood cell counts and blood oxygen levels rise very quickly with the regular drinking of wheatgrass juice and using wheatgrass juice implants. These two markers are the key indicators of health recovery for all abnormalities, ailments and disease."

Clean Plate Charlie: Why is wheatgrass juice so good for us?

Anna Maria Clement: All disease, abnormalities and aliments get better when using wheatgrass juice. Recent research shows that only living foods and juices can restore the electrical charge between the capillaries and the cell walls which allows the body to heal itself and reverses the aging process. When it is fresh, wheatgrass juice is the king of living juices.

Two ounces of wheatgrass juice has the nutritional value of five pounds of the most nutritional organic vegetables. Wheatgrass is high in vitamins, minerals and contains 92 of the 102 trace minerals recognized as available in plants. Wheatgrass as twice the amount of Vitamin A as carrots and is higher in Vitamin C than oranges, and offers the full spectrum of B vitamins, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium in a balanced ratio. In addition to the concentrated vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, and phytonutrients in wheatgrass juice it also has bio-electricity and high vibration energy which is literally the life force in this "living" juice.

How quickly can it help to heal someone?

We shy away from claiming that the Hippocrates program can heal anything or anyone. Instead, we prefer to say that we teach people how to heal themselves. Our bodies heal themselves when provided the right substances, forces, influences and conditions, and wheatgrass is a powerful tool in helping to fight against disease and illness. At Hippocrates we have see health breakthroughs in as little as two to three weeks for those going through the Life Transformation Program.

What is the recommended serving of wheatgrass juice for someone going through the Hippocrates Life Transformation Program?

Participants going through the Hippocrates signature three-week Life Transformation Program are instructed to drink two ounces of wheatgrass juice, twice a day. Additionally, participants are instructed to self-administer a four-ounce wheatgrass juice implant twice a day as a follow-up to a warm water enema. This schedule and dosage has been developed over many years of experience and has been found to be optimal for the maximum assimilation of nutrients. Wheatgrass juice is a powerful concentrated liquid nutrient. In addition to flooding the body with therapeutic dosages of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, and phytonutrients, wheatgrass juice is also a powerful detoxifier cleansing the body of heavy metals, pollutants and other toxins stored in the body's tissues and organs.

What is a wheatgrass implant, and what does it do?

An implant, also called a retention enema, is best taken after an enema or colonic. An enema bag is inserted into the colon containing approximately 4 to 8-ounces of wheatgrass juice, where it is held in the lower bowel for about 20 minutes. Using an implant bypasses the stomach acids, and the wheatgrass juice immediately replenishes the body with electrolytes and minerals via the hemorrhoidal vein, a direct route to the liver, heart and bloodstream. When applied internally, wheatgrass can also help to alleviate even the most sever cases of constipation.

How often do you recommend people take wheatgrass juice at home after they've left Hippocrates?

Once a guest has left Hippocrates they should continue to drink two ounces of wheatgrass juice twice a day, and use a four-ounce wheatgrass juice implant once a week. The juice should always be taken on an empty stomach so the nutrients can be absorbed more efficiently. The type of seed to use is red hard winter wheat berries grown in organic potting mix soil using fresh filtered purified water. The wheatgrass juice must be consumed fresh, within 15 minutes of juicing for the best results.

Are wheatgrass supplements and freeze-dried powders as good as fresh wheatgrass juice?

Wheatgrass supplements and freeze dried powders are nowhere near as effective as fresh wheatgrass juice. [Hippocrates Health Institute] did a study in conjunction with MIT when [the institute was located] in Boston. The study revealed that wheatgrass supplements and freeze-dried powders are only two percent as effective as fresh juiced wheatgrass consumed within 15 minutes of juicing. These nutrients begin to oxidize -- or break down -- very quickly after that 15 minute time period.
