Fleeing the Big Apple for balmier climes, chef-restaurateur Roberto Vacca has opened his first local restaurant, Piccolino (78 S. Federal Hwy., 561/395-8858), serving pizza and traditional Italian cuisine in a modest but nicely appointed space off Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton.

"Very small" ("piccolino" in Italian) describes both the restaurant itself (40 seats indoors and out) and its prices, which only twice break the $20 barrier for entrees and stay resolutely under $20 for pizzas, pastas and everything else.

There's no reinventing the culinary wheel here, with a dinner menu of Italian stalwarts like mozzarella en carrozza, tortellini al prosciutto, pizza Margherita, chicken scarpariello and tiramisu.

The modestly priced lunch menu offers $9 pastas and panini, $5 per slice pizza, and entrees like the day's fish done with your choice of Francese, Milanese or piccata.
