This Sunday June 14, the BX Beer Depot in Lake Worth will be holding one of their famed homebrew competitions, this go-around focusing on the all-important summertime favorite: session ales.

We talk about beer a lot here, ranging from beer dinners to breweries, to festivals and beyond. It can sometimes be a bit overwhelming.

Which is why if you’re really interested in the whole craft beer movement, there’s no better way to get involved than to check out what everyday folk like you and I can do with some malted barley, water, hops and yeast.

As the event describes, session beers are regarded as “... very well balanced and low alcohol so that everyone can enjoy several of them without succumbing to premature intoxication.”

Because it is summer time in Florida, the Depot wanted to test homebrewers abilities to brew something well balanced and refreshing. The goal for homebrewers is to arrive at this balance while clocking in at under 5% alcohol by volume.

Sunday’s event will be a showcase of styles, and is open to the masses.

“The general public will pay $15 to enter and they will enjoy over 20 handcrafted homebrews from local homebrewers,” BX Beer Depot owner Sally Parsons told us. “There will be many different styles of beers, so everyone will find something to enjoy. On top of drinking and talking with a great homebrew community, they will also be able to help vote for their favorite homebrewer!“

Homebrewing is where many professionals get their start. You may find yourself drinking a beer from the owners of the next talked-about brewery — or even thinking, I could brew something like this...

BX Beer Depot is located at 2964 Second Ave. N., Lake Worth. Call 561-965-9494, or visit bxbeerdepot.com/homebrew_competition.
