Three Best Places for Vegan Mexican Food in Broward County

¡Atención, veganos! Just because you are vegan or looking to eat a little healthier doesn’t mean you have to forego Mexican food. We have searched high and low to find the best vegan options in Broward County so you don’t have to.

These are not vegan spots making Mexican options. These are authentic, local Mexican restaurants conscientiously providing truly vegan options so you can dine with your omnivorous and foodie friends in gustatory bliss.

The Vegan Police have questioned each restaurant about ingredients and preparation techniques, as well as policies to avoid cross-contamination. While each also serves animal products, these three Mexican restaurants win the prize as the most vegan-friendly.

3. Tequila Sunrise

Everything about Tequila Sunrise screams authentic. From the décor to the imported spices, this full-service restaurant is everything you could want in a Mexican-themed eatery. Enjoy the full bar featuring specialty tequilas and fishbowl margaritas as well as the extensive list of creative vegan options. In addition to vegan tacos and burritos, they offer Vegan Picadillo Enchiladas, Vegan Mexican Pizza, and Vegan Chilaquiles, which are layered corn tortillas and grilled veggies topped with Ranchera sauce, red chili hummus, and guacamole. All ingredients are homemade onsite and vegan options include white or Mexican rice, refried or black beans, tortillas, roasted veggies, guacamole, Ranchera or Verde sauce, and a black bean vegan burger. 2. The Whole Enchilada

With three locations in Broward County, The Whole Enchilada has been catering to vegans since its inception nine years ago. The repurposed wood-lined walls and corrugated steel accents give it a cool, urban feel, and they use no leather seating. Veggies are grilled several times per day on steam-cleaned grills before any meat is prepared. Employees are happy to accommodate vegans and will take additional precautions to avoid cross-contamination when preparing vegan meals. In additional to vegan black beans, pinto beans, Mexican rice, and hard and soft tortillas in both corn and flour, they offer a mild, marinated chili-garlic tofu that can be substituted for meat in any dish at no additional cost. The Whole Enchilada prides itself on not owning a freezer, and guacamole and salsas are prepared fresh daily. 

1. Tacocraft Taqueria and Tequila Bar

Taco Craft knows vegans like to party just as much as anyone else, and their funky Riverfront location offers a full bar and a variety of vegan options right in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Chef Jaime Diaz says that 20 years’ experience as a chef and 16 years with a vegan girlfriend has made him meticulous about avoiding cross-contamination with animal products. Creative dishes include Tofu Al Pastor tacos or Kale & Sweet Potato tacos with vegan cilantro-lime crema, as well as the Mexican Chopped Salad and the all-new Quinoa Bowl. Tortillas, guacamole, beans, and yucca fries are all vegan, but the rice is not. The marinated tofu has a hot kick and can be substituted for meat on request.
