Today is the official first day of fall -- the autumnal equinox, if you will -- and it feels just like it, right? Not so much? Whatever; doesn't mean you can't celebrate the non-existent-for-now season with a sampling of cool weather flavors (and no, that doesn't mean candy corn Oreos). After the jump, find four things to eat and drink today in South Florida in celebration of the season.
4. Deconstructed Reuben at Max's Harvest
This creative take on a classic sandwich finds corned Heritage pork belly standing in for corned beef and butter-toasted rye croutons replacing slices of bread. Stout beer mustard is folded into housemade thousand island dressing, and the kitchen's own sauerkraut tops it off. There's a faint Oktoberfest vibe to this new dish at Max's Harvest. Make sure to pair it with a fall brew for best results.
3. Fall harvest cocktail at Kapow! Noodle Bar
Kapow! Noodle Bar in Boca Raton has unveiled a new specialty cocktail for autumn. The "fall harvest" is a simple drink of Bulleit Bourbon that has been infused for three weeks with apples, cinnamon, and vanilla. Get it while supplies last.
2.Fall beer classes at Total Wine & More
Numerous Total Wine & More stores throughout South Florida will host Oktoberfest- and pumpkin-themed classes today from 3 to 5 p.m. Space is limited, so call your closest store ASAP to see if there are classes (and spaces) available. The cost is $15 per person and you'll learn about and sample various autumnal beer offerings.
1. Pumpkin everything at Einstein Bros. Bagels
We'll break from the "local/best first" routine to partake in the outrageous pumpkin bounty that is Einstein Bros. Bagels during the fall months. Over the top in its embracement of this classic autumn flavor, the stores are offering frozen pumpkin lattes, regular pumpkin lattes, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cream cheese poppers, and of course; pumpkin walnut crunch bagels. We'll go ahead an pass on the Play-Doh-colored pumpkin shmear, though, thanks.
