Five Best Food & Drink Events in South Florida This Weekend: Fuzzy Animals, Health-Food, and More

Hate to rain on your parade, but it looks like it's going to be a fairly rainy weekend. Let's just hope the weather (wo)man is getting it wrong again. Even so, this is South Florida; it'll probably pass in five minutes and we'll be off to another beautiful albeit hot and humid day. Whether you're looking to drink some beer with some friendly animals, eat health-food to your heart's content, or check out some food trucks and classic cars, there is something to occupy your time and mouth in Broward and Palm Beach counties this weekend.

5. South African Wines & Cheese Tasting

Everyone has had American wines and cheeses. Even if you're not a francophile, you've probably at least tried French. And we've all had a bottle of Chianti and some Italian mozzarella. South African wines and cheeses, though: probably not. On Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Whole Foods Market Fort Lauderdale is hosting a South African cheese and wine tasting event including charcuterie. The cost to attend is $15 per person. 4. Pup Crawl

While it's nice to get out of the house on the weekend, it's not really cool to leave Fido at home by himself. Take him drinking with you on Sunday at downtown West Palm Beach's Pup Crawl on Clematis St. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the 200 block of the street will be filled with music, food, a pet parade, and costume contest at 12 p.m. Restaurants will be offering discounts on food and drinks for participants.

3. PGA Gourmet Food Truck and Custom Car Show

Motor vehicles serve many purposes these days: they get you where you need to go, they make a statement about who you are -- if yours is expensive enough, it might help you score at Blue Martini, and they frequently serve up delicious fare. To celebrate all things automobile, the PGA National Resort & Spa is hosting a gourmet food truck and custom car show on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For $30 in advance, $35 at the door, check out cool cars and motorcycles, food truck samples, live music, and a bunch of family fun. VIP tickets, which allow access to the Heineken Beer Tent for including unlimited beer, are $40 in advance, $45 at the door. Weekend hotel packages are also available.

2. Fort Lauderdale Health Food Expo

Just in case you haven't noticed: fatty junk food is out, kale is in. On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the first-ever Fort Lauderdale Health Food Expo is coming to town with live demos, contests, entertainment, and tons of nourishing food and beverage tastings, right in downtown Fort Lauderdale's Huizenga Park. Participating restaurants include Green Bar & Kitchen, Myapapaya Juicery & Kitchen, Organic Brewery and The Royal Pig Pub & Kitchen. There is no cost to attend the festival, but tasting tickets cost $40 through the event website. Tickets are available online, until they sell out.

1. Food Truck Safari

Food trucks are awesome, animals are the best, and going out on a Saturday night is what working all week is supposed to be about. If you agree, you should probably check out the Food Truck Safari at the Palm Beach Zoo. If you don't, you might want to check in with your therapist. On Saturday, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., the zoo, which will be littered with food trucks, live music, and animals galore. Entrance is $10 per head.
