5. 101st Annual South Florida Fair
Deep-fried butter and Oreos are so passe. If you really want to stray from the diet at this year's South Florida Fair, why not spring for the chocolate-covered scorpions and crickets courtesy of Jungle George's Amusements. There's also the popular maggot melt sandwich. Getting hungry? (Don't worry, there is plenty of regular ol' fair food to be found.) The New Times' calendar has all the details on the 101st Annual South Florida Fair, which runs this weekend in West Palm Beach.
4. Das Biergarten Opening Weekend Celebration
Das Biergarten in Jupiter is tapping its first kegs just in time to catch the end of South Florida Beer Week. The party is 5:30 to 8:30 tonight (Friday), with happy hour specials from 4 to 7 p.m. They'll pick back up with the celebrations on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. and continue 'til close with happy hour specials, live music, and an assortment of beers.
3. South Florida Beer Week Celebration
Due South Brewing -- a rising star in the Florida craft scene, and rightfully so -- will mark South Florida Beer Week by tapping some special treatments and firkins, and hosting guest taps. The food truck Lucille's on Wheels will be on hand to feed the beer-buzzing masses, and Sugar Mama Sweets will be selling sugary treats. The party is 5 to 11 tonight (Friday).
2. AIWF's Ninth Annual Culinary School BBQ Battle
No pork product is safe at this Sunday's battle of the 'cue. The AIWF's Ninth Annual Culinary School BBQ Battle is 5 to 8 p.m. in Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The cost is $60 per person. Five culinary schools will compete in barbecue brisket and side-dish competitions and local restaurants and beverage companies will be on hand with food and drink stations.
1. Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival
The Seventh Annual Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival is the end cap to a week of Florida-brew love. Online tickets for the event -- which runs from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday -- are sold out, but 1,500 tickets will be sold at the door. Those are $35 (cash only) and are available on a first come, first served basis. That means if you want a shot at sampling beers from dozens upon dozens of the country's finest brewers, you'd better arrive early. The festival is held in Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.
Can't get in the gates? Craftoberfest (the festival's sister event) will set up shop across the street at the Abacoa Amphitheater from 2 to 7 p.m. There's no cost to attend and beer will be for sale in a designated beer tent.
