Most of us dread April 15. But this year I'd been looking forward to it, because that's the day the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop opened in Sawgrass Mills (2602 Sawgrass Mills Ave., Space 1219, Sunrise, 954-835-0680). The legendary San Francisco chocolate company was born in 1852, when Domingo Ghirardelli, the son of an Italian chocolatier, journeyed to California to seek his fortune during the gold rush days. The company has ten soda-shop locations, but this is the first one in South Florida (Miami Beach will soon be added to the list), and the ice cream sundaes are rich enough to satisfy any prospector. The supersundae called the "Earthquake!" is particularly guaranteed to rock your world -- eight flavors of ice cream slathered with eight toppings -- if only because it costs $19.06. But you can share it with friends, which is probably the best (and most reasonable) way these days to search for gold (chunks of fresh bananas, chopped almonds, and whole cherries) in them thar' hills.
