You've heard of galas before, but this one promises to redefine the word. On Monday, June 26, from 7 till 8:45 p.m., the United States Sommelier Association, Inc., is hosting the Gala French Wine Trade Tasting at the spankin'-new Diplomat Resort Country Club & Spa (501 Diplomat Pkwy., Hallandale Beach; call 305-466-3440 for event details). And as long as you wear "business attire," admission is complimentary, though donations will be graciously accepted to benefit the Mel Davis Scholarship Fund to the USSA Wine School at Johnson & Wales University in North Miami. That means for the price of wearing a tie -- and hey, let's be generous, a couple of bucks -- you can sample 135 different wines from France's 35 most prolific boutique wineries. Now that's what we call a bargain binge or, if you like, a gala.
