Free deep-fried onions and free (possibly pink-slime-laced) burgers won't necessarily appeal to every consumer, but it seems there's one national chain promotion with practically universal allure. Ben & Jerry's is celebrating "free cone day" today from noon to 8 p.m. at stores around the country, including here in South Florida, and long lines can be expected.

Like all Ben & Jerry's stores, the location at Sawgrass Mills will offer a free scoop for customers, who may (as a "thank you") contribute a cash donation to the store's selected charity, Paws 2 Care Coalition. While not every flavor in the display case will be up for gratis grabs, eight popular flavors, like vanilla and chocolate-chip cookie dough, will be part of the promotion. The Ben & Jerry's at Sawgrass Mills is located at 1800 Sawgrass Mills Circle, Sunrise. Call 954-707-2343.
