Roaches Found at Three Broward Restaurants

Last week, three local Broward restaurants were issued emergency closure orders by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation during routine inspections. All three restaurants were found to have roaches. 

On March 5, 2012 Joe's Coffee Shop, located at 2 NE Third St. in Pompano Beach, was found to have eight critical violations, including:

  • Observed dead roaches on premises. 5 under the 3 compartment sink, 1 next to the deep fat fryer, 6 in the mop sink in the kitchen, 1 juvenile on the counter behind the front counter, 15 adults in a unused reach-in cooler behind the front counter. Repeat Violation. This violation must be corrected by : 3/6/12.


  • Observed roach activity as evidenced by live roaches found, 1 adult & 1 juvenile running across the kitchen floor, 1 adult in the mopsink in the kitchen, 1 inside storage cabinet with dry beans, At least 100 adult & juveniles on the side of small oven in the kitchen. This violation must be corrected by : 3/6/12.


  • Observed the accumulation of dead or trapped birds, insects, rodents, or other pests, in control devices. 4 dead adult 2 dead juveniles & 1 live adult roaches in gluetrap under a storage cabinet in the kitchen.

The restaurant was issued an emergency closure warning on March 5 and was reopened March 6, when inspectors returned to find the violations were addressed.


On March 5, 2012, Deluxe Take Out restaurant, located at 510 NE 13 St., Fort Lauderdale, was found to have six critical violations, including:

  • Produce with mold-like growth. Corrected On Site. voluntarily discarded .

  • Food stored on floor. Produce under pot shelving unit stored directly on floor.

  • Dead roaches on premises. 3 dead behind cookline cooler.

  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found. 10 live roaches behind chest freezer near cookline/dishwashing area. 1 live roach on floor crawling from kitchen to steam table in front counter area. 1 live by soda storage cooler in front counter area near steam table . 3 live roaches under cookline cooler 2 of them juveniles. 2 live roaches by 3 compartment sink.

The restaurant was issued an emergency closure warning on March 5 and was reopened March 6, when inspectors returned to find the violations were addressed.


On March 9, 2012, Sergio's Americas Bakery, located at 10264 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs, was found to have 35 violations, 24 of them critical, including:

  • Observed potentially hazardous food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit, chicken, beef and pork, in McCall reach in cooler.

  • Observed unpackaged food in an unprotected holding unit in a customer/nonsecure area, 2 chest freezers with empanadas, vegetables and french fries, by guest restroom not locked. 

  • Observed torn packages/bags of food exposing the contents to contamination, beans sitting on kitchen floor.

  • Observed improper horizontal separation of raw animal foods and ready-to-eat foods, raw chicken stored next to raw beef, in reach in cooler , no walk-in-coolers on premise.

  • Observed 3 dead roaches on premises, in 3 compartment sink , 1 in handwash sink, 20 plus behind oven and fryers, 5 plus dead on kitchen floor .

  • Observed roach activity as evidenced by 8 live roaches found under reach-in-cooler in kitchen, 2 crawling on kitchen floor,1 crawling on wall by 3 compartment sin,1 crawling on mixer in kitchen , 1 crawling on wall by guest restroom, 1 crawling on wall where clean pots are being stored, 1 crawling on kitchen door, 1 crawling behind sanitizer test strip on wall by 3 compartment sink ,

  • Observed excessive accumulation of dead or trapped roaches in control devices, glue traps, throughout kitchen .

  • Pesticide use not in accordance with manufacturer's directions, observed 4 cans of Raid roach spray in kitchen .

The restaurant was issued an emergency closure warning on March 9 and was reopened on March 10, when inspectors returned to find that most of the violations were addressed.
