Summer is ostensibly the slow season, but there are still some shakeups and new ventures to keep an eye on in the Broward and Palm Beach county restaurant scenes. Here's a look at a few South Florida food news items that have popped up on the radar.

Mellow Mushroom to Open in CityPlace
Fans of stoner-riffic pizza haven Mellow Mushroom will soon get a second South Florida location to satiate their Kosmic Karma and Thai Dye cravings. The chain -- which has more than 120 locations across the country -- is opening a 7,000-square-foot restaurant in CityPlace.

The restaurant will go into the space at Okeechobee and Rosemary Avenue previously occupied by Kona Grille. The restaurant will open by the end of the year, but no definite opening date has been announced.

This addition to CityPlace is part of a flood of new businesses going into the complex before the end of the year, among them Pampas Grille, Mojito Latin Cuisine & Bar, and Revolutions Bowling Bar & Grille. (Read more about Revolutions, here.)

Bar Louie Opening July 26 in West Palm Beach
Bar Louie is making a return to West Palm Beach this month. The restaurant will open on Thursday, July 26, at 200 Clematis St. The grand opening will be celebrated Monday, July 30, through Sunday, August 5. The restaurant's previous space in West Palm Beach -- on South Rosemary Avenue -- closed in 2009.

Rapoport's Restaurant Group (Deck 84 and Bogart's Bar & Grille) Partners With Chef Mark Militello
Chef Mark Militello is popping up in new places in South Florida. Restaurateur Burt Rapoport of Rapoport's Restaurant Group has hired the chef to consult on menu updates for two of his restaurants: Deck 84 in Delray Beach and Bogart's Bar & Grille in Cinemark Theatres in Boca Raton.

Militello helped to create nine new menu additions for Bogart's, including a coriander seared tuna, an ultimate BLT with avocado mayo and North Country Smokehouse bacon, and chicken Milanese. Militello and Deck 84's chef, Jon Greening, partnered to add seven new items to the waterfront restaurant's menu, among them Prince Edward mussels, English ale battered fish and chips, and Baja shrimp tacos.

New Italian restaurant coming to Sunrise
Sunrise will get a new Italian spot for dinner when Italian Red Sauce opens August 1. The restaurant is located at 3828 N. University Drive in Sunrise. Call 954-533-8347. The restaurant's website offers few clues about the menu -- so far it's just a clock ticking down the hours until the opening date -- but stay tuned to Clean Plate Charlie for details.
