Toast Shirley Temple Back With These Shirley Temple Recipes

Long before Lindsay Lohan, Drew Barrymore, and Macaulay Culkin, there was Shirley Temple.

The child star started her film career during the Great Depression. Often portraying a plucky orphan who remains cheerful in dire circumstances, the tiny talent sang her way into the hearts of the world.

The ringlet-haired ragamuffin charmed Eleanor Roosevelt, who asked for her autograph, and danced with seasoned partners like Jack Haley and Buddy Ebsen. Instead of being chewed up by Hollywood, Temple married Charles Alden Black, the assistant to the president of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, and in 1969, left Hollywood, and began a lifelong career in public service.

According to the New York Times, Mrs. Black was appointed by President Richard Nixon to the United States delegation to the 24th session of the United Nations General Assembly. In 1974 she was appointed ambassador to Ghana, then Czechoslovakia. Mrs. Black was quoted as saying she, "had enough of pretend".

Shirley Temple Black died this past Monday evening at her home in Woodside, California at the age of 85. We'll toast her life with a Shirley Temple.

The non-alcoholic cocktail was created either at The Brown Derby or Chasen's, both Hollywood restaurants that catered to celebrities, to honor the pint-sized movie star who couldn't even drink yet. Made from ginger ale, lemon-lime soda, grenadine, and a maraschino cherry, it's sweet and bubbly -- just like the child star herself.

The cocktail, served to children for decades at parties, has grown out of favor, mainly because there are so many flavors of pre-made kiddie drinks. But the cocktail, made with premium ingredients, is refreshing and sweet, and will bring back instant memories the second you start fishing for that cherry with your straw.

We've shared the classic recipe -- as well as a boozy "adult" version.

So, this afternoon (or evening), make a Shirley Temple and toast to a life well played -- both on screen and off.

A Well-Made Shirley Temple

3 oz. Fever Tree Sparkling Lemon or Bitter Lemon soda (or any other premium lemon-lime soda. Sparkling lemonade works well, too)

3 oz. Fever Tree Ginger Ale (or any other premium Ginger Ale)

Dash Grenadine

Maraschino cherry for garnish (don't forget the cherry)

Pour the sodas into a Collins glass filled with ice. Add the dash of grenadine and garnish with cherry. Serve with a straw.

Shirley Temple Black (alcoholic version)

1 1/2 oz lemon vodka

3 oz. Fever Tree Sparkling Lemon or Bitter Lemon soda (or sparkling lemonade)

Dash Grenadine

Sparkling wine or Prosecco

Maraschino cherry for garnish

Pour vodka and soda into Collins Glass filled with ice. Add grenadine and top with sparkling wine. Garnish with Maraschino cherry.
