We have a local winner in the Darwin Awards, a contest that rewards fabulous demonstrations of human mortality — but exists mostly for the enjoyment of people with an extremely dark sense of humor. This year, that dubious honor belongs to Shawn Paul Montero, a 30-year-old man who on the night of April 12, 2008, was driving home from a Pompano Beach bar. He was drunk and needing to urinate. His desire to do so privately was at odds with an I-95 traffic jam. This apparently led him to scale a freeway wall. Tragically, there was not a soft patch of grass on the other side of that wall.

There was a 65-foot drop.

But let’s not remember him as a Darwin Award winner. His mother offers a (slightly) more charitable eulogy.

“Shawn didn’t do a whole lot for a living. He got along on his charm, just like his father.”
