Sitting the folks down and announcing your life’s dream to be a fashion designer isn’t always met with the same enthusiasm as say, the dental school decision, but for those students who choose the road more fashionable, it’s the right one — even if a career path of uncertainty awaits. Often what makes one fledgling designer stand out from another is a little exposure to the right people. This is where the Heat of Fashion Designer Competition comes in. All summer long, judges have narrowed down the pool of local fashion grad talent in a series of competitions.
Tonight, we’re down to the top eight finalists: Ashley Edouard, Faith Marrett, Gary Bauer, Risque Dukes, Virginia Chambers, Wallace Taylor, Vanelys Garcia, and Kavita Channe, who will present men’s and women’s wedding, couture, and avant garde in a fashion-show finale. Creators of the THOF Fashion Designer Competition hope to give students and recent grads access to a new media platform and help them gain exposure to potential buyers. Each designer has a five-minute window to present five designs in a chance to win $1,000 cash, a photo shoot, and a TV and radio commercial spot. Tickets cost $25, and VIP seating costs $45. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Atlantic Hotel (601 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Visit heatoffashion.com.

Sat., Sept. 20, 6 p.m., 2014
