Newly arrived on the local scene, West Palm Beach’s Hellhounds are out to put the South back into South Florida. Their self-described style of “deltabilly blues” takes the raw, hypnotic riffing of Mississippi Hill Country and amps it up louder than a locomotive crossing under a low-flying jumbo jet. The songs on their just-released, hard-as-hell, blues-to-the-bone debut, Halfway Between Somewhere and Nowhere, aren’t exactly subtle or dynamic. Produced in Memphis by Stax/Volt bass legend Donald “Duck” Dunn and his son Jeff, the album is instead full of brute force and whiskey-flavored soul, which is almost too heavy to bear on CD. Live, however, this stuff is frighteningly good. Looks like the South has risen again.
