Staying alive is definitely an occasion worth celebrating. Commemorating the deliverance of the Jewish people from a plot to destroy them throughout the ancient Persian Empire, Purim has become a day of feasting and rejoicing. The day is honored with festivities, merrymaking, and, best of all, costume parties. South Florida offers plenty of options for observing the holiday.
This Sunday, Temple Solel’s Jill Edison Purim celebration, Purim in the Park, encourages families to get outside and get active. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the all-ages event will feature a one-mile Purim Prance, followed by activities around Shelter #9, including pick-up basketball, interactive games with GetFit4Kidz, a bake sale, a barbecue lunch, and a traditional Megillah reading with Cantor Israel Rosen, who is slated to arrive in a surprise costume. Stepping up the Purim-party game, Purim on Las Olas Masquerade will bring revelers together with a more young-adult slant. The bash, taking over Bar Stache this Wednesday at 8 p.m., will feature Kosher foods, a Megillah reading, and a bit of mysterious fun. More than 500 guests are expected to attend.
