For great people-watching without the worry of bare feet dancing tabletop next to your appetizer, pay a visit to the sleek new Trata Greek Taverna on Las Olas Boulevard. The upscale eatery has several tables outside on a romantically lit covered patio, along with a dozen tables and a chic bar inside. The menu is loaded with traditional favorites from the motherland, starting with appetizers such as grilled baby squid ($9.95), marides (AKA pan-fried smelts) ($8.95), and everybody’s favorite flaming saganaki cheese ($9.95).
There are plenty of seafood options, including the piato tou psara, a Greek fisherman’s platter of scallops, shrimp, baby squid, and the fish of the day ($62.95; serves two). Other entrees include paidakia, lamb chops soaked for 24
hours in garlic, olive oil, and herbs, then grilled ($26.95); stifado, a
Greek beef stew made with braised short ribs ($22.95); and ortikia,
charbroiled whole baby quails served with lemon potatoes ($19.95).
If
all that sounds too swanky for your simple palate, don’t fret. The
place offers your standard gyro, chicken and lamb kebabs, and
spanokopita — and it all happily comes without the crazy, loud music
and constant screams of “Opa!” you might find at those other
Greek places.
Trata Greek Taverna is located at 1103 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. For reservations, call 954-712-8933.
