The place: The Jib Room, 2104 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-564-3581.
The hours: Noon to 7 p.m. every day.
The deal: All beers are 50 cents off, and all liquors and wines are 75 cents off. Normal prices range from $3.50 for domestic beers and $4 for imports and well liquors to $5 for calls and $7 for wine.
“Like” the Jib Room on Facebook and you’ll receive regular status updates with “passwords” that allow you to partake in the drink or food special of the day.
(Note: They check to see if you actually “Like” them online. If not,
the password won’t work.) They also have regular specials on beer
buckets and cocktails and notably popular theme nights outside of happy
hour like Trivia Night on Wednesday, Texas Hold ‘Em Thursdays, and NFL
Sundays.
The digs: The Jib goes for a decidedly nautical theme, a theme that is then filtered through Jimmy Buffett’s margarita. From the
dock-like seating area (pylons and all) by the entrance and the tiki hut
with the oceanview mural to the wall of tropical fish tanks and
ceiling strewn with nautical flags, the décor screams, “Welcome to the
tropics!”
The verdict: The happy hour may not be the best
deal in town, but that’s only because the regular prices are already so
reasonable. The kitchen, from the affiliated restaurant next door,
offers patrons goodies like the conch burger — kind of like Florida’s
version of a fried oyster poor boy. Owners, longtime bartender Brian and
attorney Debbie, who are also married, are a welcome, constant
presence, taking pride in both tending bar and schmoozing with
customers. Their stated mission? To be fair-priced and very, very local:
Debbie, after all, is a Fort Lauderdale High alum and former teacher
there and considers the Jib Room a home for the Flying L’s.
