Renalto Obos was shot dead in November 2004 while sitting in a car on NW Third Avenue with his girlfriend. It was a robbery gone awry. The killer wore a mask, and due to the random nature of the crime, Broward Sheriff's Office couldn't find a suspect until last month, when homicide Det. Frank Ilarraza's phone rang.
It was an inmate at a South Carolina prison who said that his friend had borrowed his gun for a robbery and that in doing so, he had killed a Haitian man: Obos. The inmate named that friend: Ismael Soto McCall, now 24. (McCall would have been 19 at the time of the shooting.) BSO detectives say they matched McCall's fingerprints to the car in which Obos was killed. McCall will be charged with first-degree murder.
BSO's release is here.
