John Farrell, a math and statistics teacher at Cardinal Gibbons Catholic High School, was arrested on Memorial Day for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of his students

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Farrell, 25, is facing multiple counts of unlawful sexual activity with certain minors.

The BSO report says the relationship was "consensual." The student is 16-years old.

According to the report, Farrell and the student began having their relationship during "after school activities."

Farrell had also apparently asked the student not to say anything about their relationship in a phone call with her.

According to the Archdiocese of Miami, Farrell, who is a first-year teacher at the school, was given a full background screening and training before being hired on.

Mary Ross Agosta, Director of Communications at the Archdiocese of Miami, released an email statement regarding Farrell's arrest:

Late afternoon on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2013, Cardinal Gibbons Catholic High School administrators were notified by the Broward Sheriff's Office that John Farrell, a math and statistics teacher at the school had been arrested. According to the BSO police report Mr. Farrell has been charged with sexual assault and battery.

Mr. Farrell, a first year teacher at Cardinal Gibbons, successfully participated in the full background screening process and VIRTUS training required by the Archdiocese of Miami's Safe Environment Policy prior to his employment for the 2012-2013 school year.

Cardinal Gibbons' administrators are fully cooperating with the BSO's investigation; in addition, notification has been sent via email to all parents of the student body.

Agosta says Farrell is on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Farrell was granted a $50,000 bond by Judge John Hurley, and ordered to have no contact with the student, either directly or indirectly. Hurley also ordered Farrell to wear a GPS monitor, to keep him him from communicating with her.
