Known as the "Bastard Son of Broward County," Damien Figler headlines the kickoff party for the national Hellbound Comedy Tour this Saturday in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale. Tall, tattooed, and barrel-chested, Figler comes across as a Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller fame) type who has undergone a rock 'n' roll makeover and tailored an act for the slightly demented. He has made a name for himself locally with standout sets opening for national act Doug Stanhope and as the featured comic at the Aura Music and Arts Festival. In Hellbound, Figler leads a cast characters who look more like roadies and rockers than actual comics but dish out full-throttle laughs, much as death-metal spews jarring guitar riffs. Rounding out this bill of comedy skewed toward the dark and macabre are like-minded local hardcore bands Kill the Tyrant and One Mind.
The kickoff party for the Hellbound Comedy Tour takes place Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Monterey Club, located at 2606 S. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $5. Call 954-598-1887, or visit facebook.com/monterey.sofla.
