Ani DiFranco

I spent my high-school lunch breaks hiding behind the bowling alley to smoke cigarettes because, A) I hated everyone, and B) I wanted to lose 15 pounds. My choice soundtrack for wallowing in self-pity was, of course, that of Buffalo-hailing songwriter/feminist icon Ani DiFranco. (My unofficial anthem: “Not a Pretty Girl.”) But that was back in the ’90s. Since then, I’ve learned to hate selectively, and DiFranco’s grown out her shaved ’do and embraced motherhood. She’s not the radical she used to be—but, hey, neither are the fans. Here’s to the righteous babe music that helped us survive adolescence.
