Among the ever-growing numbers of satellite art fairs, Pulse Miami stands out for its high concentration of contemporary photography -- a much-missed medium since Photo Miami was canceled in 2010. It's also housed in a kickass venue, Ice Palace (1400 N. Miami Ave., Miami), where the hammocks outside are almost as worthwhile as the artwork inside. Pulse opens Thursday at 1 p.m. and runs through Sunday. Admission costs $10 to $20. Visit pulse-art.com.
Fountain Miami, which opens Friday and runs through Sunday, contains arguably the most experimental art during Basel. Think entrails worn outside the body, cars set aflame, and piles of discarded trash presented like classical Greek statues. Doors open at noon daily at 2505 N. Miami Ave. in Wynwood. Admission costs $10. Visit fountainartfair.com.
