Perhaps comedian Patton Oswalt’s says it best when he describes Cirque du Soleil as being “wet and French and gay and on fire.” Well, there’s a different outfit coming to town, but it’ll have similar outfits: It’s called Cirque Dreams, and one of its shows is Cirque Dreams Illumination. The Cirque Dreams show is an acrobatic mishmash set in some kind of urban landscape and looks a bit like watching Rent while tripping on mushrooms. The fire hydrants wander around. A guy plays drums by juggling balls against the heads. Dudes balance on chair stacks and tightropes, B-boys pop and lock, someone appears to be stuck inside a spinning gyroscope, flexible ladies curl into backward letter c’s. It’s not du Soleil, but your grandma won’t care when she sees the soaking-wet gymnast on the rings. Get your cirque on at the Hard Rock Live at seven shows between Wednesday and Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood). Wednesday’s performance is at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $40, $55, and $70 and are available at the venue’s box office, on ticketmaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
Wed., March 10, 8 p.m., 2010
