Much has been written about the impact of fashion magazines’ propagation of the impossibly thin ideal and its negative effect on the collective psyche of girls and women. But what can be done to combat it? That’s where the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness steps in. Since 2000, this nonprofit has been organizing nationwide community outreach programs promoting a positive body image and educating at-risk youths and medical professionals alike in the dangers of eating disorders. This Saturday, the Alliance will host the fourth-annual Celebrating Everybody: A Walk for Eating Disorders Awareness to spread its message of hope and recovery throughout South Florida. With an anticipated 800 participants, this year’s walk promises to be the biggest one to date. The first 650 registrants will receive event T-shirts and gift bags. One hundred percent of proceeds raised will go toward the production and distribution of The Florida Eating Disorders Treatment Referral Guide.
Celebrate every body this Saturday at A Walk for Eating Disorders Awareness, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Pond Apple Pavilion in South County Regional Park, located at 11200 Park Access Road in Boca Raton. Registration costs $25 for adults (18 and older), $15 for children and students (17 and younger), and $5 for pets. Call 561-841-0900, or visit allianceforeatingdisorders.com.
