It’s that time of year when we start scouring stores and hoarding D batteries (no, not Valentine’s Day.) It’s hurricane season! Floridians are an odd bunch when it comes to the five months of wind and impending doom; we have a couple of quiet years and we forget entirely about Wilma’s complete annihilation of Broward Country. The crew at Crane’s BeachHouse (82 Gleason St., Delray Beach) hasn’t forgotten. How could they? After the hurricanes in 2006, Crane’s took in everyone from the Red Cross to FEMA, an act that leaves a lasting imprint on a joint.

Touched by the memory of community come-togetherness, Crane’s owners now throw a yearly celebration to kick off the storms in proper style: with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and celebrity bartenders. You’re invited to show up tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. and party like it’s 1999 — besides, all proceeds go to benefit the Red Cross. $20 gets you one drink and snacks (additional drinks are available at happy hour prices).
