Finally. A silent auction that peddles more than autographed footballs and tired gift certificates. In conjunction with Boca Festival Days, the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Hospice of Palm Beach County co-host "Don't Box Me In -- Celebrity Creations" as a sure way to resuscitate weary gala-goers. Up for bid are 60 cigar boxes turned inner child art projects that have been decorated by local artist guild members and politicians as well as by personalities like Brooke Shields, Helen Gurley Brown, and NBC's Matt Lauer (whose father spent time at Hospice of Palm Beach County). Yeah, OK, and also a few requisite sports icons like Jack Nicklaus and Chris Evert. The names only get bigger. Insiders say we can expect the predictable poesy on Maya Angelou's woodprint and an original drawing from Yoko Ono. It might be worth the $30 admission just to see what Donald Trump can do with a glue gun. The cocktail reception lasts from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Boca Raton Museum of Art (Mizner Park, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton), and includes appetizers, music, and a last-chance viewing of the current exhibit, "Steve McCurry: Photographs of Asia." If drinks and a movie aren't enough for one evening out, how about drinks, games, a movie, and a scavenger hunt? Social Fusion has ways of making you meet people. Says company owner Chris Muccio, "You'll meet more people in 90 minutes than you would in a month of Fridays." Seemingly at a meth-induced pace. How does it work? At SF's "Reel Fun" event, you'll start with happy-hour drinks, then meet people through a scavenger hunt and game playing (usually game playing is reserved for after you've known someone awhile) at Gameworks (2608 Sawgrass Mills Cir., Ste. 1303, Sunrise), then head off to Regal Cinemas for a movie, then go back for more games and scavenging. Tacky art prevails
THU 8/26 You are peeking through a keyhole, which happens to be in the shape of an Absolut vodka bottle. You see the back side of what appears to be a woman. Then you notice that her drawers are off, but instead of sitting on the toilet, "she" is standing up, facing it. Ewww! This mock advertisement, by Cesar Santos, is titled "Absolut Deception," and it's one of the works in the aptly named "Tacky's" exhibit, which parodies the ad industry. The show was conceptualized by the student group Art Asylum. Check it out through September 1 in the Mark K.
