Another winter weekend in South Florida means another walk for a worthwhile cause. We’ve had a surfeit of these great exercise opportunities recently, but if you still haven’t chosen a charity walk, there may be no better nonprofit than Florida’s branch of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, whose funds grant wishes for terminally ill children. Last year, the 1,300 walkers/runners raised more than $170,000 for the organization’s fifth-annual Broward County Walk for Wishes, ensuring that 34 sick children saw their wishes realized. The charity is hoping to raise $200,000 with this year’s 5K walk/run. As usual, participants should stick around after they complete the course for a light breakfast, a Zumba session, and Family Fun Day activities, including face-painting and bounce houses.
The entry fee is $10 for child walkers, $15 for child runners, $25 for adult walkers, and $30 for adult runners. Online registration closes at noon Friday, and the race takes place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday (you can register in person beginning at 7:30) at Markham Park, located at 16001 W. State Road 84 in Sunrise.
