Second Saturday's Jazz Night Kicks off this Weekend at Monterey Club

The Monterey Club had been missing something for a while there. What was it again? It's on the tip of our tongues... That's right! The ability to serve full liquor at the bar!

Rob Stannard and his fledgling club have had their fair shares of ups and downs and all arounds, but now, after reopening in January of this year, they've finally been able to get their alcoholic bearings together and can serve a full bar's worth of delicious liquor.

Bands will start sounding good again! Just kidding, they've done a great job of keeping Wednesday through Sunday nights steadily supplied with quality music. And now, in a move that should surprise no one, they are kicking off their recently rewarded bacchanalian prowess with a newly minted monthly event, Second Saturdays Jazz Night, a night that will correctly capture that "retro cool" spirit to which the venue has always aspired.

The event will be hosted by house band, the JazzMonkeys, an ensemble unit culled from the three major academic music programs in South Florida. Guitarists Adam Hernandez and Cris Diaz hail from the University of Miami and Florida International University respectively while the rhythm section of Victor Sanchez (drums) and Joel Chavarria (bass) come from Miami-Dade College as does keyboardist Darrick Lucas.

Informed by a variety of styles like bossa nova, the blues, Latin jazz, funk, and Afro-Caribbean sounds, as well as classic jazz like swing, bebop, and quintet standards, the JazzMonkeys are looking to lend an aural retro-cool to the venue that has always managed a lingering appeal for the kitschy and vintage. While they might "impress with their favorite transcriptions and passionate improvisation colored with smooth licks and intricate climbs," nothing says "hello and welcome" to a full arsenal of booze than the sounds of that bygone jazzy era.

In order to celebrate this new joie de vivre, there will be free parking and drink specials. We can only assume that you'll be encouraged to dress to the nines, and channel your wardrobe's swinging best doodads so you can trip the light fantastic amidst the thirsty hep daddies and long, cool gals attracted by the sounds and the booze.

The JazzMonkeys at 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, at the Monterey Club, 2608 S. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Doors open at 7 p.m., $5. Call 954-598-1887.
