Video: The True Meaning of the Hukilau

Before the 14th annual Hukilau festival gets too far away from us — remember, Mary Ann was in town last weekend — we'd be remiss not to point out this video that our friends across the BPB universe made last weekend, featuring festival founder Christie White. Here, White shares a little knowledge about the origins of The Hukilau as well as the event's goal: casting a “metaphorical net” to catch as many fun loving folks from around the world. Last weekend The Hukilau drew about 800 fans and seems like it's only getting stronger; perhaps as strong as some of the fruity and flowery cocktails served throughout the weekend.
KEEP NEW TIMES BROWARD-PALM BEACH FREE... Since we started New Times Broward-Palm Beach, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of South Florida, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
Angel Melendez is an unabashed geek and a massive music nerd who happens to write words (and occasionally take photos) for Miami New Times. A graduate of Florida Atlantic University and an accomplished failure at two other universities, Angel is a lush and an insufferable know-it-all, and has way better taste in music than you. His wealth of useless knowledge concerning bands, film, and Batman is matched only by his embarrassingly large collection of Hawaiian shirts and onesies.
