When it comes to big-time politicians known to have seriously cottoned to flamboyant Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein, Florida's new chief financial officer escaped notice almost entirely.

Jeff Atwater, who was elected to the state cabinet position in November, talked on a voice message left on Rothstein's phone of how Rothstein, whom he calls his "dearest supporter," was integral in his becoming the Florida Senate president and told him of his plan to run the CFO position in May 2009.

Now Atwater, who lives in Palm Beach County and whose former Senate district includes parts of Broward, holds the state's purse strings and is promising to fight fraud. Too bad he couldn't spot one in his own backyard.

Inside see Atwater's message, and find out just how well the call paid off for the politician.

Here's the transcription. It's a bit muddled and misspells Atwater's name, but the gist is apparent.
