David Hartstein Charged in Billiard-Ball Attack on Two Men, Ages 91 and 79
When David Hartstein thought a 91-year-old man stole stuff from his locker, he allegedly tried to settle that by trying to bash the man's head in with a billiard ball.
When a 79-year-old man tried to stop the attack, police say he received the same treatment.
The Palm Beach State Attorney's Office announced today that Hartstein, 61, is being charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a person 65 or older, which could land him a prison sentence of up to 60 years if convicted.
According to a police report, all three men were in the billiards room at the Century Village clubhouse near Boca Raton just after noon on October 19 when Hartstein accused the 91-year-old man of stealing things out of his locker.
Hartstein, pool ball in hand, approached him and smacked him in the head twice with the ball, the report says.
When the 79-year-old man attempted to help the older man, he was struck in the head with the ball as well, police say.
According to the cops, other people in the area were able to subdue Hartstein until sheriff's deputies arrived and arrested him, and both men were transported to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Hartstein told police, "Everyone there surrounded me, jumped me, and tried to steal my car," the report states.
That's when police inquired about any mental illness, to which Hartstein said he had "unspecified mental issues" for which he refuses to take medication for.
Hartstein is currently being held in the Palm Beach County Jail on $30,000 bond, according to the State Attorney's Office.
