Boynton Beach cop/alleged meth trafficker/federal fugitive David Britto has been on the run since August 24, and according to a filing submitted yesterday by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Britto hopped on a flight to Brazil that same day.
In a motion filed in federal court by Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Fels, Britto took a flight from Miami to Brasilia, Brazil, on August 24 -- which the cops didn't find out about until some point later.
"On or about August 24, 2011, the United States Probation Officer assigned to monitor
Defendant received a 'tamper alert' from the Defendant's electronic monitoring device. Law enforcement officers later learned that the Defendant had boarded a flight from Miami to Brasilia, Brazil that same day," Fels' filing says.
There's no further explanation as to how law enforcement discovered Britto's flight or when it found this out, although it is explained that Britto's presence is required at a September 14 status conference.
Barry Golden of the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed to the Pulp on August 31 that the week before, Britto had cut off his ankle monitor that he'd been wearing since posting $100,000 bond on July 7.
Golden maintained that the Marshals Service didn't know where Britto was and said Britto's family was not being cooperative with law enforcement.
According to the feds, Britto, 28, was charged with
conspiring to possess and traffic more than 500 grams of meth and could
face the maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
Britto was born in Brazil before moving to New York, according to his personal website, and was a sergeant in the U.S. Marines before becoming a cop.
To earn his Officer of the Year recognition last year from the Boynton Beach Police Department, Britto worked 18 narcotics cases that led to 25
arrests and seized the following drugs: 757 Xanax pills, 161 oxycodone
pills, ten grams of crack cocaine, and 46 grams of weed.
