The entire nation is reeling and reacting to Wednesday night's tragic mass shooting in a Charleston, South Carolina, church. According to multiple reports, a white man named Dylann Roof allegedly sat with African-American parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a Bible study for about an hour before opening fire and killing nine people. One of the survivors reportedly said that Roof told his victims, "I have to do it. You rape our women, and you're taking over our country. And you have to go."
Roof was apprehended Thursday morning in North Carolina.
President Obama held a news conference Thursday in which he decried the shooting as something that happens far too often in America. “This type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries,” the president said.
At the crux of the discussion around the mass shooting: race and gun control — the two most divisive subjects in America. And these two subjects have long irritated Stormfront, the white nationalist, white supremacist, and neo-Nazi internet forum founded by Palm Beach resident Don Black in 1995.
On Wednesday evening, as news reports of a white male opening fire inside an all-black church began to trickle in, Stormfront members logged onto the forum and chimed in to speculate and discuss what it all meant.
At the heart of the discussion was the fact that the so-called "liberal" media was going to manipulate the shootings to make the nation turn on whites. Others said this was somehow Obama's fault, since he's out to create tension that would lead to a race war and eventually his remaining as president after his term ends. Yet others said this was going to be another reason for their Second Amendment rights to be trampled on.
Below are some of the more outrageous statements and conspiracy theories put forth by Stormfront forum members following the shootings:
"Obviously I am very against this heinous act of violence. Although a White guy going on a mass shooting is made such a big event because it happens so rarely. Blacks commit mass shootings every day in major US city."
"Someone mentioned Obama needed a means to create nationwide chaos in order to declare martial law and remain in the Whitehouse. Is this how he intends to do it? There should be plentiful after this."
"The media and the left will use this to support their narrative that whites are slaughtering blacks. It will not matter what the truth is."
"Watch the propaganda show begin now. We all know it's about the agenda to enrage black people against whitey. This will be a 24/7 discussion on CNN and MSNBC, where black-on-white crime is never mentioned."
"Well.... they can't blame the police for this one!! But worse, the White residents of Charleston may have to tread carefully."
"While I wouldn't support this I would like to point out that Whites will continue to show their anger more and more, things aren't going to be pretty."
"Yep, bad news for gun rights advocates. Another nail in the coffin for the 2nd Amendment."
"I pray for all the whites in that area and elsewhere that will be killed and raped using this as an excuse."
In a 1998 New Times feature, Black said, "We want to take America back. Whites won't have any choice but to take military action. It's our children whose interests we have to defend."
Messages left for Black to comment on the forum and the South Carolina shootings have remained unreturned.
