Train Kills Man in Fort Lauderdale, Keeps Going, Kills Person in St. Augustine

A 19-year-old man was hit by a train early Friday near SW Second Street in Fort Lauderdale. The train, running from Miami to Atlanta, continued with a fresh crew through St. Johns County, where a second person stepped in front of it and died.

Contrary to news reports by the St. Augustine Record, NBC Miami, the Associated Press, and others, however, Fort Lauderdale Police say the first victim did not walk in front of the train.

"That's inaccurate," said police spokesman Det. Travis Mandell, who said preliminary evidence suggests that the man, Jonathan Adario of Cooper City, was lying next to the tracks when he was killed.

A spokesman for the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the second person did step in front of the train, but he said he wasn't sure if the second person had been identified yet because he was "in a lot of parts."

If you know anything about the Fort Lauderdale death, call Fort Lauderdale Police Sgt. Steve Novak at 954-828-5556.
