No. 99: Primanti Bros. Sandwich

Just by the description, the Primanti Bros. sandwich sounds like another example of over-indulgent American food. A sandwich made on thick Italian bread, stuffed with fried meat, coleslaw, and fries.

But no. Somehow, the Pittsburgh-based sandwich joint, with three Broward County locations, pulls off the Dagwood-like sandwich. First, the thick Italian

bread is light and compacts perfectly when squeezed to fit into your

mouth. Then come the fries -- freshly cut and salty. The meat gets

griddled when you order it and runs the gamut from burgers to smoked

sausage with an egg cracked over the top. And the cole slaw provides

not only a hefty crunch but its light dressing gives the whole thing a

strange lightness to it.

One tip: This sandwich is best if

eaten at the 24-hour location on A1A, say around 2 in the morning. It's

then that you can put aside any worries about whether Primanti can pull

off such a creation.
