Classes are supposed to be informative and educational.
Some are so boring you'd rather walk over a pile of burning coals than show up. Yes, we're talking to you, Intro to Calc.
Others can be a bit more enjoyable. (Hint: Eating food and drinking wine tends to help.)
In a mix of entertainment and culinary edification, D'Angelo executive chef Rickie Piper will teach a cooking class at Chef Jean Pierre's cooking school next week.
We got the details on the class from Piper himself.
Next Monday at 7:30 p.m., Piper will be teaching aspiring chefs -- or those who just want to learn to boil water -- how to prepare a proper dinner, Italian-style.
Beginners, novices, advanced cooks, and anyone who just wants to eat drink and have a good time will get to learn to make crispy baby lobster tail over cannellini beans puree; orange endive salad with basil pesto; homemade potato gnocchi with a cherry tomato, basil sauce topped with creamy pulled burrata cheese; Italian sausage and domestic rack of lamb combo over soft reggiano polenta and exotic wild mushrooms; and a soft chocolate cake with homemade pistachio gelato, Sicilian sweet ricotta, and fresh strawberries.
Along with Angelo Elia, Piper has been teaching courses at Chef Jean Pierre's for over six years. They teach a range of subjects from cooking with white truffles with they're in season to how to make homemade pasta.
While the class is not necessarily hands-on -- it's more of a demonstration -- Piper does invite audience participation in the course.
"People can get up and make the gnocchi with me if they want," he said. "However, most people like to sit, have a glass of wine, and ask questions. And everyone gets to taste everything."
From his years of experience, Piper advises that guests arrive with an appetite.
"By the time you come and leave, you're not going to need to eat dinner," he said. "We're very generous. We're Italian: We like to make sure no one leaves hungry."
The class is $85 per person. Space is limited.
