Tim Armstrong might have found riches producing and writing for big names such as Pink and Gwen Stefani, but his fame and respect came from his time singing and playing guitar for the Berkeley punk group Rancid.
Formed out of the ashes of the hardcore Operation Ivy with fellow alumnus Matt Freeman, Rancid was able to ride the wave of West Coast punk as it went mainstream, touring and collaborating with other beneficiaries like Green Day and the Offspring. In spite of their record ...And Out Come the Wolves going platinum and having a song appear in the very un-punk-rock movie Clueless, Rancid was able to avoid cries of "sellout." It did so by staying signed to indie labels throughout its now-20-plus-year career.
Not content with leading Rancid to what earlier in the tour has been an exhaustive 29-song set, Tim Armstrong is also his band's own opener with Tim Timebomb & Friends. This side project allows Armstrong to record his favorite songs from artists as diverse as Bob Dylan to the Ramones and releases a new one each day on the website timtimebomb.com.
