While the arts in Broward and Palm Beach have been showing some life outside of the major institutions for a while, this weekend happens to be pretty exceptional -- and not only because of the annual fest ArtServe and the affiliated event Red Eye. Here is a roundup, though not an exhaustive one, of some (cheap!) happenings Friday and Saturday.
Friday:
Red Eye: Celebrating South Florida's more eclectic and unconventional artistic creations, Red Eye is always one of the most popular events of the summer. In addition to art by Skot Olsen, Chris Hooper, Juan Carlos Soto, and Ruben Uberia, music will be provided by Dooms de Pop, Alexander, the Green Mantles, and the Waves. Admission costs $5. Thee Itty Bitty Blazer Gala: This year, the Bubble will host an afterparty for Red Eye called Thee Itty Bitty Blazer Gala, hosted by Travulous, the interplanetary glam-fab superstar (see photo above). The showcase will include music by Dooms de Pop, Scott Putesky, Radar vs. Wolf, the Green Mantles, Bad Ass, and Travulous & Friends. The gala will also showcase local designers during a fashion show. Saturday:
Blue Water Initiative at Mugs: Feeling confused about how you can help out with the disaster in the Gulf? Mugs Sports Bar and Grill (2671 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) will offer an opportunity Saturday with Blue Water Initiative. All-day drink specials include $2.50 Coronas and Corona Lights, $4 margaritas and mojitos, $3 Bay Breezes, and more. Admission is a $5 donation at the door.
Because We Like to Party: Hosted by Laser Wolf Productions, this art-cum-music event will feature Miami band Beings, Blond Fuzz (formerly Stone Fox), and Web Low Boys as well as art by Erick Arenas, Chuck Loose & Iron Forge Press, Janette Valentine, and Chris Piller. Swarm II Warehouse Party: The first Swarm warehouse party was a celebration of alternative street culture in its various manifestations, from grafitti to skateboarding to tattooing. Local staples like Jasper Delaini (you may know him as DJ Sensitive Side from Tuesdays at Monterey Club) will be among the attendees, but the music will be provided by Astrea Corp, Kin Keezy, and Los Bastardos Magnificos. Admission is free. The event starts at 9 p.m. and is open to all ages. The warehouse is located at 500 SW 21st Terrace in Fort Lauderdale.
