Whoever said the finest things in life don't come cheap never visited Hot Dog Heaven (101 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-523-7100), a walk-up joint where you can order at the window then sit at a picnic table and eat an excellent Chicago-style dog with the works -- mustard, relish, onions, pickles, and hot peppers -- for just $2.80. And that price includes a serving of French fries. For another 35 cents each, you can add toppings like chili, cheese, sauerkraut, and coleslaw. Open only for lunch (from 10 a.m. till 4:30 p.m.), Hot Dog Heaven is the most reasonable and tastiest way that I know to bring on a case of heartburn -- unless, of course, you add the price of the Pepcid AC you have to buy before you eat there.
