After spending nearly 30 years honing its adroit metal, Sepultura has long established itself as the Brazilian equivalent of Metallica. Although the departures of both Cavalera brothers means bassist Paulo Jr. is the sole original member left, the band's thrash has consistently maintained an intelligent bent, politicizing ghoulish metal imagery, basing records on A Clockwork Orange and The Divine Comedy, and pulling off a totally respectable cover of Devo's "Mongoloid." At a São Paulo festival in mid-April, Sepultura underwent another rite of passage for big metal bands by playing alongside an orchestra for the first time. Kairos, the group's 12th LP, is forthcoming in 2011. Feel free to get your hopes up, as guitarist Andreas Kisser recently described it as the heaviest in the band's history.
